Pastor Testimonies:

The Summit Teton Valley Church – Driggs, Idaho

Growing up I was always very shy and did not have a lot of self-confidence. By high school I began using alcohol and drugs to deal with my insecurities and fears. By the time I got to college I was out of control and didn’t even know it. I woke up in the hospital after crashing my mom’s car into a telephone pole partying one night. I became aware of God and began to read the Bible for the first time searching for meaning and purpose in my life. I was captivated by Jesus, but still depended on alcohol and drugs to deal with life.

Two years later I was watching Rex Humbard on TV and he kept saying “God loves you and has a plan for your life.” The testimonies I heard got to my heart and I prayed for God to forgive me and believed in my heart that God raised Jesus from the dead. I asked for a new life and got born again in the spring of 1979.

My life has meaning and purpose. Over time I was able to overcome my addictions as a new confidence grew in me. I was able to think less of myself and more of others. I’m not near as shy as I used to be and I can even talk in front of groups of people! I’ll be forever grateful to God for this new life in Christ.

Adult Testimonies:

Raised in a religion that didn’t tell us how to be born-again, I left disillusioned at a young age. They taught that theirs was the only true religion, so I had nowhere to go but to the world. I became a teenaged alcoholic and drug user.

In my early 20s, I graduated to using hard drugs after meeting a criminal who became my boyfriend for 10 years – until finding him dead of a heroin overdose on our bathroom floor. During the time that I knew this man, I attempted suicide twice.

I attended a 12-step meeting once while he was still alive, but he was angry that I had gone, so I didn’t return to the meetings until after his death. I was desperate for help, and finally help for my recovery began at that very first meeting.

The year following his death, I had my first of five mental breakdowns resulting in hospitalization. Later that year, I was diagnosed as having manic depression, now more commonly known as “bipolar disorder.” The doctors said that I’d be on lithium medication for the rest of my life.

During one of the 12-step meetings I attended, a man called “Preacher Larry” talked about Jesus each time he spoke. That’s all I remember hearing. At the end of the meeting, I told him that I wanted Jesus in my life. Since I was shy at that time, I told him that I didn’t want to pray there in front of people. So, we went to his car and I prayed, asking Jesus to come into my life.

I stopped drinking and using drugs through the 12-step programs I attended, and three years later, I was fully freed from the medication that the doctors said I’d be on for the rest of my life.
